Torme, Mel
|
Melvin Howard Torme was born on September 13, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois. He began singing publicly at the age of 4 and by 15 he had his first published song that was sung by Harry James. Throughout Mel’s career, he published over 250 songs, most in collaboration with Bob Wells.
During WWII, Mel sang lead with the Mel-Tones however went solo in 1947. It was during this time that his smooth voice and style earned him the nickname of “The Velvet Fog”, a name that he disliked.
By the 1960’s, Jazz music was becoming increasingly popular and Torme adapted his song writing and sing to fit the trend. This proved to be great for his career as it flourished in that genre of music. For the last twenty years of his career, Mel has made many albums and has recorded them in various settings and with various people such as George Shearing and Rob McConnell and his Boss Brass Orchestra.
Through out his career, Mel recorded over 18 albums and appeared in 23 films. Mel Torme died on June 5,1999 of a stroke.
