Mathis, Johnny

John Royce “Johnny” Mathis was born to Clem and Mildred Mathis in Gilmer, Texas.  When Johnny was young, the family moved to San Francisco, where he attended public school.  There he succeeded in various sports, he also sang during school functions as well as in the church choir and at community events.

Johnny attended San Francisco State College on an athletic scholarship, and was even invited to go to the Olympic tryouts.  Simultaneously, Mathis had an appointment to record an album at the same time the tryouts were being held, however he decided to make the album and not tryout.

Johnny has made over 180 albums and has been the longest recording artist to be with Columbia Records still being with the label today.  His recent album “Isn’t It Romantic: The Standards Album” was enthusiastically received by the critics.
