Jones, Norah
|
Norah Jone's father is the famed sitar maestro Ravi Shankar. Norah's earliest musical influence came from her mother's extensive LP collection and from 'oldies' radio. While in high school, Norah won the DownBeat Student Music Awards for Best Vocalist and Best Original Composition in 1996. She also won second place at the Student Music Awards for Best Jazz Vocalist in 1997. After graduation, she felt that studying piano would be a more solid foundation. She majored in jazz piano at the University of North Texas in order to give herself a solid foundation before taking a trip to New York City.
In the summer of 1999, Norah moved to Manhattan. She began recording the songs of "Come Away with Me" in May 2001, an album notable for its pop, country, and soul leanings. The album was lodged at the top of the Billboard contemporary jazz chart for over one consecutive year, from March 2002 to June 2003. Jone's music crosses the boarders from jazz to soul to folk-based pop. Norah's honey and smoke voice urges listeners to hear original and classical songs, as if for the first time.
In October 2000, Norah Jones and her band recorded some demos for Blue Note Records. Norah used this as an opportunity to find her voice between her roots in jazz and a new passion for songwriting. In January 2001, she signed with Blue Note Records and released her first album under the label entitled "Come Away With Me" which was released February 26th, 2002.
