Stan Kenton
|
Stan Kenton was a true student of music. He studied music and composition first with his mother, Stella, then with theater organist Frank Hurst before moving on to learn from one of the true greats in jazz piano history; Earl “Fatha” Hines. Most of these lessons were conducted in Hines’ hotel room using a cane-backed chair with a masonite chair for a keyboard (both had good enough sense of pitch that they didn't need the actual piano).
After bouncing from chair to chair in the 30’s, Stan went on to realize his greatest musical ambition was to start his own band. Throughout the years, Kenton’s bands would produce a string of alumni that became household names in the world of jazz. Names such as June Christy, Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz, Maynard Ferguson and Kai Winding would grace his bands for years.
Stan Kenton continuously pushed his bands to the limits to continue moving his music towards the future of jazz and not keeping it in the nostalgic past. This process taught him an invaluable lesson: audiences want good music. Kenton understood this until the very end as his band stayed on the road until his death on August 25, 1979. Kenton’s life and music is one that will always be mentioned and appreciated among the greats of jazz history.
