I've been using this recipe for the last 30 years. The yogurt you'll make this way is a lot better than what you'll find in the store, and much less expensive. The trick is to make it in a 5-quart crockpot, but drop the power to the crockpot by wiring a 40-watt bulb in series with it like this--

1/2 tsp Unflavored gelatin
3C Powdered milk
1T Sugar
1 lg can Evaporated milk
@3 T Yogurt
Sprinkle the gelatin over a few tablespoons of cool water to soften.
Meanwhile, heat about a cup of water to boiling. Pour over the gelatin to make 1 cup.
Add the sugar.
Mix the powdered milk with 5 C water. Add evaporated milk. Add the gelatin.
Add the yogurt. The first time you'll use unflavored yogurt from the market. On subsequent batches use a bit of yogurt from the last batch you made. Eventually this won't work anymore, and you'll have to start fresh with store-bought yogurt.
Set the crock pot to low and leave overnight. |
