FEBRUARY 2008

"February is HEART MONTH"

February is American Heart month, and now is a great time to start thinking about your trusted ticker. Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are our nation's No. 1 killer, but there are plenty of things you can do to keep your heart pumping healthy.

First, if you smoke, quit. Cigarette smoking is the most important preventable cause of premature death in the United States. Cigarette smokers are two-to-three times more likely to die from coronary heart disease than nonsmokers. Ask your doctor about stop smoking resources to end your tobacco use.

Second, start a fitness regimen if you haven’t already. Walking is one of the easiest ways to elevate your heart rate. Walk at lunch, during your coffee break, or in the morning to start your day. Walk as long as you feel comfortable and always consult your doctor before starting any exercise routine.
