The first time that country music touched the ears of Wayne Scott as a young boy in rural Kentucky; he knew he had a calling. The music changed his life forever as he digested the songs of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and Lefty Frizzell. “My family was slightly musical,” he says. “Everybody could play something, but I think I had a disease of it. I was born to want to play and sing.”
Scott began writing songs as a teenager and left home at the age of 16 bouncing from Michigan to Indiana before finally landing in California and putting a band together for the first time in his life at the age of 40. He played dusty taverns and roadhouses with his sons who were quickly becoming respected musicians. He played the west coast circuit for 20 years writing original songs the whole time, although he never played his originals in public. Scott gave the audiences what they wanted, hits they could sing and dance to.
Eventually the lifestyle wore him down and Scott moved back to his hometown in Kentucky to live the rural life. At that time his son Darrell Scott was becoming one of Nashville’s most respected and accomplished musicians. Then one year, Darrell received the most important Christmas gift of his life. Wayne decided to give his son a songbook with over a hundred of his original compositions. Darrell recognized the brilliance of his father’s work and convinced him to cut his debut album at the age of 70. “This Weary Way” is a remarkable introduction to a man that had been honing his craft for over 60 years. A man, that no doubt, is a remarkable musician.
